Google Ads copy prompt (copy-paste)

DIRECT ANSWER

A Google Ads copy prompt instructs an AI to produce a full set of responsive search ad headlines (30 characters max) and descriptions (90 characters max) organized by theme — keyword, benefit, proof, and CTA — ready to paste into Google Ads Manager. Use it when creating a new RSA or refreshing underperforming ad copy.

The prompt

You are a Google Ads specialist. Write responsive search ad (RSA) copy for a search campaign. Every character count is strict — Google will reject copy that exceeds limits. Product: [product name]. Landing page offer: [what the page delivers, e.g. 'free audit' or '14-day free trial']. Primary keyword this ad group targets: [exact keyword, e.g. 'marketing automation for startups']. Target customer: [ICP — role and pain point]. Top three benefits: [list them]. Any proof (stat, customer name, award): [paste it or write 'none']. Write exactly 15 headlines (each 30 characters or fewer, including spaces). Label each with its character count in brackets at the end. Organize them into five themes: Theme 1 — Keyword match (3 headlines that include or closely mirror the target keyword); Theme 2 — Benefit (3 headlines that lead with a specific outcome the customer gets); Theme 3 — Proof / credibility (3 headlines using the proof provided, or generic credibility signals if none provided); Theme 4 — CTA / offer (3 headlines that state the action and offer); Theme 5 — Pain / problem (3 headlines that name the problem the customer has right now). Write exactly 4 descriptions (each 90 characters or fewer, including spaces). Label each with its character count. Each description should pair with a different theme above. The first sentence of each description states a benefit or proof; the second sentence ends with a CTA. Do not use exclamation points in more than two headlines. Do not use 'unlock,' 'leverage,' 'revolutionize,' or 'game-changing.'

How to use it

Always verify character counts before uploading — paste each headline and description into a character-count tool. The AI occasionally miscounts by one or two characters. For the keyword field, use the exact match-type keyword your ad group targets, not a broad topic — the closer the headline matches the query, the higher the expected Quality Score. When you upload the RSA, pin your strongest keyword-match headline to Position 1 and your best CTA headline to Position 3. Leave the rest unpinned so Google can optimize combinations.

What good output looks like

Strong RSA copy will have headlines that are complete, specific thoughts — not fragments. The benefit headlines will name an outcome, not a feature ('Cut reporting time in half' not 'Advanced reporting'). The CTA headlines will include the offer, not just a generic verb ('Start your free trial today' not just 'Get started'). Descriptions will use the full 90 characters without padding — wasted space is wasted message. Each description should be readable as a standalone sentence that completes the thought a headline starts.

FAQ

Google Ads copy prompt — common questions

How many headlines and descriptions does Google require?

You can add up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions to an RSA. Google recommends at least 10 headlines and 4 descriptions to give the system enough combinations to optimize. The output from this prompt gives you exactly that.

Should I create one RSA per ad group?

Yes — one RSA per ad group is Google's current best practice. Pin only when you have a compliance or brand reason. The more you pin, the less data Google can use to find the best combinations.

How often should I refresh the copy?

Review ad strength ratings monthly. If a headline theme is consistently rated 'low' in the asset report, replace it. Full copy refreshes every 60-90 days are reasonable for active campaigns.
